PELT CommitteeGlass Recycling: An UpdatePELT wants to share an update on glass recycling in Alexandria. Last September, PELT wrote about the effort to add another dedicated glass recycling container closer to Rosemont. This has resulted in the addition of signs directing cars to the drop-off at MOM's Organic Market in Arlandria, thanks in no small part to the efforts of Robert Letzler. We also very much appreciate the help of Gary Hensley and his colleagues at Alexandria City T&ES in that effort. The City is now rethinking its recycling program - not just of glass - and has hired a consultant to conduct a study of recycling in Alexandria. The study is scheduled to end in October, and could result in the roll-out of a new system next year. This may or may not include the reintroduction of curbside glass collection. A new waste management recycling sorting facility is coming online in Maryland and may be able to do a better job sorting out glass from single-stream recycling, but City staff have not been invited to visit yet. For the reasons described in last September's update, glass is more likely to be recycled when it's collected in a single-stream, so it will be interesting to see what the City learns and decides to change - if anything - following the results of the study and the bids it receives from service providers. Duke Street Land UseFor those interested, the next Duke Street Land Use Plan Community Meeting will take place at 6:30 PM on Thursday, September 25, at Bishop Ireton High School and online via Zoom. Featured will be a summary of feedback received from the community poll, resulting draft Guiding Principles and Q&A.
